Bharatanatyam

The timeless temple dance.

Bharatanatyam is one of the oldest and most revered classical dance forms of India, with origins tracing back over 2,000 years. Rooted in the temples of Tamil Nadu, it was traditionally performed as an offering to the deities, telling stories from the Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Puranas.

The name is often broken down as BHA (Bhava – expression), RA (Raga – melody), TA (Tala – rhythm) and Natyam (dance) — a perfect blend of emotion, music, rhythm and movement.

Characterised by precise footwork, clean geometry, and powerful abhinaya (expression), Bharatanatyam is both devotional and dramatic, uniting spiritual depth with stage presence.

Mohiniyattam

The dance of the enchantress.

Mohiniyattam originates from the lush state of Kerala, with roots dating back to the 16th century under the patronage of the Travancore kings. The name means dance of the enchantress -Mohini, the mythical female avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Traditionally performed as a solo female dance, it is known for gentle swaying movements, circular patterns and soft, graceful expressions drawn from the Lasya aspect of dance.

Stories of love and devotion to Lord Vishnu and Krishna unfold to Carnatic music, the lilting edakka and mridangam, mirroring the serene beauty of Kerala.

MOHINIYATTAM AT JANMA

We focus on fluid torso movement, eye work and subtle abhinaya, helping students find softness, poise and inward connection through each piece.

Semi-Classical

Blending tradition with modernity.

Semi-classical dance retains the grace, rhythm and expressions of classical forms like Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam, while weaving in folk, cinematic and contemporary influences.

Emerging strongly in the late 20th century, it offers flexible music choices, innovative storytelling and simplified movements, making classical aesthetics accessible to wider audiences.

From cultural programs to online showcases, semi-classical often becomes the bridge between temple traditions and today's stage and screen performances.

SEMI-CLASSICAL AT JANMA

At Janma, semi-classical is where students explore creative choreography, stage presence and expression rooted in classical technique but open to modern music and ideas.
